BuzzFeed’s UK editor is hoping to meet the star journalists of the future at Leeds Trinity University’s highly anticipated sixth annual Journalism Week.

Luke Lewis, a former editor of the popular music site NME.COM, was appointed as BuzzFeed’s UK Editor after he approached their New York office in late 2012 with an innovative idea.

At the time BuzzFeed was searching for a night editor, but Luke instead provided the editors with a mocked up version of what a UK version of the popular online site would look like.

Having previously led NME.COM to win a number of industry awards for his innovative use of social media, including Best Use of Social Media, Luke is now responsible for building BuzzFeed’s audience in its first territory outside of the US.

The site currently has a global audience of 169.2m and is continuing to grow.

Ahead of his talk at Leeds Trinity, Luke said: “I’m really looking forward to the event. It’ll be good to have the chance to tell people what BuzzFeed’s all about, and hopefully I will get to meet some star journalists of the future.”

Students will hear a range of talks throughout the week from a host of industry professionals, giving them a fantastic insight into the journalism industry.

Postgraduate journalism student, Felicity Macnamara, 22, said: “I think that given the opportunity to meet so many industry professionals and listening to them speak and get their advice is fantastic. It is exciting to give live coverage and I think it will help us in future projects.”

Leeds Trinity graduate, David Spereall, 21, added: “I’m really excited about Journalism Week. I think it’s really important that students get a taste from people who have been and done it all. Lectures can only teach so much so it sets a good example.”

David and other students and lecturers said it is particularly important to hear from speakers from the world of online journalism…
