Successful Leeds Trinity journalism alumni are returning to Journalism Week with the hopes of captivating aspiring journalists with their experience in the journalism field.

Kate Russell, Cosmopolitan intern, and Joe Cooper, news reporter for The Dewsbury Reporter, will be speaking on Wednesday February 26 about their time at Leeds Trinity University, the life of a recently graduated journalist and how to secure that all important first job in a tough industry.

In 2012, after completing the postgraduate print journalism course, Joe was awarded NCTJ News Journalist of the Year.

Postgraduate journalism course leader, Lisa Bradley, 36, said: “Joe did exceptionally well, as he was hired eight months into the course.

“Not only did he win the NCTJ  News Journalist of the Year award, for a story that he wrote for our student publication here, but he was always willing to go that extra step.”

Kate Russell distinguished herself from others after fulfilling a lifelong dream of getting a job at Cosmopolitan magazine.

Lisa added: “What Kate did to make herself stand out in the application for the Fearless Women campaign, was instead of coming up with ideas, she actually came up with contact names, numbers, the case studies, the background, so it was all real and it was excellent.”

Current postgraduate journalism student Felicity MacNamara, 22, said: “I think it is good to meet past students that have been through the course.

“It will be really interesting to find out how they managed to break into the industry and to hear about their experience of the real world of journalism.”

And first year journalism student Katie Sherdley said she’s looking foward to hearing from Kate and all the other speakers…
