It’s the final countdown to Journalism Week and one hotly anticipated speaker is Jeremy Clifford, editorial director of Yorkshire Post Newspapers.

Jeremy stepped into the prestigious role in September and over the course of his career has worked on a number of daily newspapers including the Leicester Mercury, South Wales Echo, Derby Telegraph, Hull Daily Mail and The Star in Sheffield.

His appearance at the university on February 27 follows the announcement that postgraduate journalism trainees at the university will embark on a groundbreaking six-month internship at the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Jeremy was a driving force behind the scheme, which promises to be a fantastic experience.

Lisa Bradley, a senior journalism lecturer at the university, said: “I think it is an incredible opportunity and unlike anything else in the country.

“The purpose of it is more than just work experience; students will be mentored by both tutors at the university and senior reporters in a real world environment.

“The chance to be responsible for an entire page of news a week in such a popular and high profile newspaper is an experience you cannot get in a classroom.

“I’m really looking forward to this initiative and really excited to be involved with this new project.”

The internship will play a vital role in preparing trainees for life beyond the course.

Claire Schofield, 22, a postgraduate magazine journalism student, said: “I think it’s really exciting and I’m really looking forward to it.

“We would not have got this opportunity without this course and it will be fantastic exposure.”

John Blow, 24, a postgraduate print journalism student, added: “I think it’s a really unique opportunity.

“We keep being told that you can’t beat hands-on experience and learning on the job, so to work for a well-known regional title is going to be great.”

And first year journalism student Samantha Preece said she hopes he will inspire her and her fellow students…
