Richard Horsman, associate principal lecturer, said: “She was a very good student. I am very proud of her.”

Miss Iqbal is one of the main reporters and presenters responsible for covering national and international stories for the BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat programme.

Ryan Jones, a journalism student at the university, said: “She’s an inspiration to us journalism students. I am looking forward to her lecture.”

Mr Horsman added: “I cannot wait to see her back here again.”

Miss Iqbal worked in commercial radio in Yorkshire and the Northwest before joining BBC Radio 1 in 2008.

She has also delivered reports for BBC Radio 5Live.
